A Real Sci-Fi Librarian

UC Riverside's Slusser

If you don't want to read the whole article, essentially Slusser became the curator of a science fiction collection for UC Riverside and fought a long battle with the school to maintain it. He has been proven right in the end as researchers from all over the world now refer to the collection.

I've already spoken at length and probably will do so again about the meaning of science fiction. Anytime I see someone dedicating real effort to it, I get all tingly and hey, did you notice they're still looking for another curator? Maybe I'll apply...

We know that pop culture needs to survive a certain amount of time before it becomes classic. We conveniently forget that Chaucer (fart jokes galore), Austen (prudish bodice rippers) and other greats were pop writers in their time. (Ok, yes it's stretching the point a bit, I know Chaucer wrote for the court). But seriously, science fiction is an interesting historical marker. Maybe that's an entry for another day.

Catch you on the flipside,
Chic Geek Librarian
